Snapshots of Black, Hispanic and Asian Research Participation

This chart shows that minority participation in FDA 2024 clinical trials varied widely depending on the therapeutic area. Some groups were well represented in certain areas, while they were much less represented in others.

Clinical trial participation is not equal across all areas of medicine. These FDA 2024 data show that Black, Hispanic/Latino, and Asian participants are represented differently depending on the disease area. This highlights why minority physician involvement, community education, and inclusive recruitment strategies are important to ensure clinical research reflects the people most affected by disease. For example, Hispanic/Latino participation was highest in Infectious Diseases and Heart, Blood, Kidney & Endocrine studies. Asian participation was highest in Cancer studies, while Black participation was very low in Cancer studies. In the Reproductive, Urologic & Rare Metabolic category, some race and ethnicity data were limited, which means there was not enough information available to make a full comparison.

*Hispanic/Latino is an ethnicity, not a race, so it may overlap with Black, Asian, White, or other racial categories.
